New Patients

Here Is Exactly What Happens When You Become a Patient at D&Y.

No surprises, no vague process, no walking out of your first appointment confused about what comes next — here is the D&Y new patient experience from your first contact to your ongoing care.

D&Y is designed so that every step of the intake process is clear, efficient, and respectful of your time. By the end of your first appointment, you will have a working diagnosis, a treatment plan you understand, and a scheduled follow-up — not a stack of forms and a vague "we'll be in touch."

Step by Step

The D&Y New Patient Process — Start to Ongoing Care.

Seven steps. No ambiguity. Here is the full picture of what becoming a patient here actually looks like.

Step 1

Contact & First Response

Reach out by booking directly through the D&Y website or by calling or emailing the office. New patient inquiries receive a response within 1 business day. If you are not sure whether D&Y is right for your situation, that is exactly what the next step is for.

  • Website booking is the fastest path to scheduling. Phone and email inquiries are also welcome.
  • Response time: within 1 business day.
Step 2 — Optional but Recommended

Book an Appointment

An appointment with the D&Y office to ask questions, get a sense of the practice, and decide whether to move forward — before committing to a full appointment. This is also where insurance can be discussed.

  • No clinical evaluation occurs on this call. It is informational and entirely no-commitment.
  • Bring questions about insurance, the process, what conditions D&Y treats, or anything else you want answered before scheduling.
Step 3

Insurance Verification

Before your first appointment is scheduled, D&Y verifies your insurance coverage. You will know what your plan covers and what your out-of-pocket responsibility will be before you log on for your first visit. No surprise bills.

  • D&Y accepts most major commercial plans, Medicare, and VA Community Care/TriWest. Full insurance list: Pricing & Insurance
  • Private pay is also available for patients without covered insurance.
Step 4 — The Clinical Centerpiece

First Appointment — Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation (60–90 Minutes)

D&Y conducts a structured diagnostic interview covering your presenting concerns, symptom history, personal and family psychiatric history, prior treatment experiences, and the functional impact of your symptoms on work, relationships, and daily life. The process is organized and thorough — not a rapid checklist.

  • What to bring or have ready: current and past medications with dosages; prior diagnoses (written or from memory); prior treatment providers and outcomes; a clear sense of what you want to address.
  • You do not need to have all of this organized perfectly — Your provider will guide the conversation.
  • Format: secure HIPAA-compliant telehealth video appointment. You will receive a link in advance. No special software required.
Step 5

Diagnosis + Treatment Plan Delivered

By the end of your first appointment, your provider will provide a working diagnosis with the clinical reasoning explained in plain language — not jargon you have to look up later. You will also receive a structured treatment plan with defined next steps: whether that is medication, a referral to a therapist, further evaluation, or a combination of approaches.

  • "Working diagnosis" means a clinical conclusion based on the available evidence — not a permanent label. Your provider revisits and refines the diagnosis as treatment progresses and more information becomes available.
  • You are involved in the treatment plan. Your provider explains the reasoning and invites questions — you are not handed a prescription and sent home.
  • If therapy or a higher level of care is part of your plan, see our Trusted Referral Partners, the providers we trust and work with.
Step 6

Follow-Up Scheduled Before You Leave

Your first follow-up is scheduled at the end of your first appointment — before you log off. You will never leave an appointment not knowing when you will next be seen or what the plan is.

  • The follow-up schedule adjusts as your treatment progresses — here is what to expect at each stage:
Every 2–4 Weeks Early treatment — when medication response is most variable
Monthly Stabilization — once the plan is established and producing results
Every 1–3 Months Maintenance — for stable patients with well-managed conditions
Step 7 — Ongoing Care

Between-Visit Communication

For non-urgent questions, medication concerns, refill requests, or general updates between appointments, D&Y provides access through a secure patient portal. We respond within 1 business day.

  • The patient portal is for non-urgent communication only.
  • For urgent or emergent psychiatric needs, patients are directed to appropriate emergency resources — D&Y is an outpatient practice and does not provide crisis services.
Telehealth Visits

What a D&Y Telehealth Appointment Actually Looks Like.

A real conversation with your provider — not a questionnaire, not a rushed intake form. Here is what to expect before, during, and after each visit.

Before Your Visit
  • You will receive a secure video link by email before your appointment
  • No app download is required
  • Find a private, quiet space where you are comfortable speaking openly
  • Have your medication list and any relevant records accessible — not required but helpful
  • Test your camera and audio briefly before the appointment time
During Your Visit
  • Your provider will be on video — the appointment is a real conversation, not a form or a questionnaire
  • Appointments start on time and use the full scheduled window
  • If you experience a technical issue, a backup phone option is always available
  • All visits are HIPAA-compliant and conducted through a secure platform

Common Questions

What New Patients Usually Ask Before Their First Appointment.

If something is still unclear after reading through the process above, it is likely answered here. If not, the appointment is the right next step.

No. You can book directly through the website or by contacting the office. Some insurance plans may have referral requirements — this can be confirmed during insurance verification before your first appointment. When in doubt, reach out and the team will help you figure it out.
The appointment exists for exactly this reason. It is a no-commitment call to ask questions, discuss your situation briefly, and decide if moving forward makes sense. There is no pressure to schedule anything further at the end of it.

Prior diagnoses are welcome and helpful — Your provider will review your history, evaluate your current presentation, and confirm or refine the diagnosis as part of a thorough evaluation. Second opinions are always welcome. A prior diagnosis is a starting point for the conversation, not a conclusion we simply accept without an independent clinical assessment.
Yes. Your provider will review your current medications during the evaluation and work to ensure continuity of care during any transition. You will not be asked to stop existing medication abruptly — any changes will be discussed, explained, and made with your involvement.

Scheduling is typically within current availability after insurance verification is complete. Contact the office directly for current openings — the team will give you an honest answer about timing and get you scheduled as quickly as possible.

D&Y is an outpatient practice. If your provider determines that your needs require a higher level of care — inpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), or crisis services — he will provide a clear referral to the appropriate resource. He does not leave patients without a defined next step, even when that step is outside this practice.
